Scrolling, reciprocity, and the boundary of the self

Hours of scrolling are not an absence of social signal — they are the densest social signal a nervous system has ever received: faces, voices, direct address. What is absent is the other half of the circuit. The person sees without being seen; the recognition system is continuously activated and the arc never closes.

If identity is a pattern maintained by reciprocity — being seen, by someone, as distinct — then this predicts something no overload theory predicts: prolonged scrolling should degrade the sense of self-boundary more than simple solitude does, because it activates the circuit without completing it, while solitude does not activate it at all.

A four-condition design, equal time in each: feed scrolling; coherent solitary media (a book, a film); solitude without media; and brief reciprocal interaction. Measure, before and after, with a state instrument that is not self-report — source monitoring: the ability to attribute a felt state to its origin (“did this come from me, or did it enter?”). The predicted ordering: scrolling degrades most; solitude less; coherent media less still; and even brief reciprocal interaction restores disproportionately. Only a reciprocity account predicts scrolling below solitude.
